What is lot management?
Lot management means tracking stock of the same product separately by the batch in which it was produced or received (the “lot”).
A “lot” is a group of products made or purchased together under the same conditions. For example, “the batch produced on June 1, 2026” or “the batch made from the same raw materials in the same process” is treated as one lot and identified by a lot number such as LOT-20260601.
Even with the same product name or part number, a different lot is counted as “separate stock” — that is the core idea of lot management.
Why lot management matters
Keeping stock separated by lot makes the following possible.
- Traceability: you can trace “which lot of raw material this product came from, and when it was made.”
- Narrowing down recalls and defects: when a problem is found in a specific lot, you can recall or hold just that lot — without stopping all of your stock.
- Quality control: inspection records and production conditions can be tied to each lot.
- First-in-first-out (FIFO): it becomes easier to use older lots first.
